Oil paint vs. acrylic paint: What is the difference and why does it matter?

When you borrow or purchase one of the pieces in our collection, it’s not just about color and composition. The materials used also play a major role in the look and feel of the art. In this blog, we explain the difference between oil paint and acrylic paint, where they come from, and the advantages and disadvantages of both techniques.

  • Brief history

Since the 15th century, oil paint has been the paint of choice for the great masters. Think of Rubens, Van Eyck, or Van Gogh. This paint, made from oil (usually linseed oil) and pigment, is known for its deep colors and rich, soft transitions.
Acrylic paint, on the other hand, has only been around since the 1940s. This modern water-based paint dries quickly and allows artists to build up multiple layers in a short period of time. Artists such as Andy Warhol and David Hockney made grateful use of it.

  • Advantages of oil paint and acrylic paint

Oil paint is Intense, has deep colors and is rich in texture. It’s slow drying time allows detailing and adjustments later in the creation process. It gives a classic and warm look. Acrylic paint dries quickly and is ideal for fast work or layers on layers. It is less susceptible to discoloration or craquelure and can be easily combined with other techniques such as collage or spray paint.

  • Disadvantages to consider:

Oil paint has a long drying time, there’s smell of solvents and is more susceptible to aging. Acrylic paint dries fast so there’s less mixing time and is sometimes less deep glossy.
