Lives and works in Brussels (BE)

Ines Thora studied at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels and got her master’s degree in Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. She is a Belgian visual artist who focuses on the relationship between materiality, process and the intangible aspects of existence. Her work stems from an introspective approach to painting, in which she often makes her own materials, from the stretcher to the pigments. Thora works with unusual supports such as unprepared linen and transparent fabrics, making the canvas and frame themselves part of her work.

In her paintings, Thora seeks ways to make the inexpressible visible: emotions, meditative atmospheres and the physical act of painting itself. She considers each painting a “struggle with emptiness”. In her recent work, she sometimes replaces paint with fabrics and sewn elements, playfully using chance and the process itself as a creative force.

Thora creates her art not only to communicate, but also to share a personal experience. She uses prints of her hands and fingers as traces of her actions, giving the viewer an intimate connection with the work. Her work is a search for a new, harmonious relationship between nature, technology and the human experience. In doing so, she seeks out sustainable materials and raises awareness about the ecological impact of our choices.

Through her work, Thora seeks not only to evoke aesthetic feelings, but also to stimulate social and ethical discussions, while constantly pushing the boundaries of imagination and art.
