Kingsley Kofi Nkansah, born in 1991 in Accra, the vibrant capital of Ghana, is an artist whose work reflects both the deep cultural roots of his homeland and his personal journey. After studying graphic design and picture making in Accra, Nkansah found his creative path in painting people he knows and whose stories he carries with him. His work is imbued with symbolism, colours and patterns that connect Ghana’s rich tradition with the modern world.
After his father passed away in 2020, he decided to move to Belgium, looking for a new start. He settled in Ghent and was reunited with family members. This process of mourning and healing was expressed in his painting. He began painting people from his homeland, friends, family members and even his own nephew and his son’s friend. By portraying them, he sought to capture not only their physical appearance, but also their character and the stories that shape them.
What makes Kingsley’s work truly unique is his innovative use of traditional Ghanaian fabrics, which he integrates into his paintings. These fabrics, originally handmade and batik-dyed, feature geometric patterns typical of the Ghanaian textile tradition. In Nkansah’s paintings, these fabrics are not only used as decorative elements, but function as powerful symbols that fill the background and surfaces of his work. The colourful prints bring a liveliness and dynamism that enhance his portraits, while inviting the viewer to reflect more deeply on the meaning of the culture and history that these fabrics represent.
Kingsley’s art is mainly found in Europe, but his work has also gained recognition in the United States and Canada.
In 2025, Kingsley Kofi Nkansah was awarded the National Music and Talent Award for best artist, an award presented by the Ghanaian community in Belgium.
