Matthieu Lobelle starts off with  his sketchbook full of observations and reflections that are a basis for his visual work. Sometimes a sketch (out of more than 15000 drawings) is elaborated into a drawing, a sculpture, a photo, a print, an installation, a painting … This way the artist tries to outline his struggle with life in images. He tries to investigate the boundary between life and death, the relationship between nature and culture, between past and present. These are boundaries that have been the main subject for his oeuvre for more than 20 years.
