We are proud to present the work of Antwerp based artist Ilse Pierard. Ilse wrote her statement and explains what's her drive for creating her "cells".
To bring light into the world, that is the both simple sounding as elusive goal that I strive for in my work. I choose to look into the direction of lightness and colour. Even though it takes more effort to see the beautiful, cheerful side of life than the dark. Because all that is ugly and painful, tends to dominate.
My work is an ode to the cell. To the innermost of something. To the hope and the promise that is contained in the core of all life. Without conditions, without external conditioning. To how it turns inwardly and returns to the outside, in its most vulnerable form. And to the enormous power that is hidden within. (text continues under the image)
My paperworks present a great colourfulness. As a child I used to stare into the sun through a marble and turn it. I’ve always been fascinated by light and colours, and how those two interact and play. By putting several layers of transparent colours on top of each other, I try to create powerful but fragile visual statements. Because of that delicacy and vulnerability the work seemingly vibrates and, depending on the viewer’s position, constantly changes slightly.
I work from my intuition, it’s like taking a trip into my inner self. Without predetermined goals or expectations,
I let go of control and reconnect to myself, my body, the earth, the source.
