With a limited number of energetic brushstrokes Sofie starts her search for expression and character in each of her paintings. Inspired by images in her memory – mostly paintings or engravings by the old masters in art history – an emotional search for the right image takes off. She isolates details and pieces of her favorite masterpieces or adds elements which create a different perspective. The artists, she is also an art historian, gives the viewer a new interpretation. Although the subject seems recognisable at first sight, the image is alienating and enigmatic and carries a fundamental restlessness.
Sofie Mercken’s oeuvre holds references to the work of Magritte, Courbet, Goya, Picasso and Willem de Kooning.
